[ARCHIVED] Dentention Officer

The Teton County Sheriff’s Office is hiring for the position of Detention Officer. We are looking for Candidates with experience in a Detention Facility and POST certified in Detention Officer Basic. Successful applicants will become part of a key component in the criminal justice system and can enjoy a challenging and rewarding career in law enforcement.

Detention Officers are responsible for the care and welfare of prisoners confined within the Jail while using proper safety methods and techniques. They maintain the security of the facility by conducting security checks, settling disputes, performing cell searches and inspections and conducting outside perimeter checks. Detention Officers are responsible for issuing inmate meals, clothing, linens and personal items; supervising inmate programs, including recreational, legal, health care, visitation and religious services; preparing reports on Jail and inmate activities; supervising inmates performing such assignments as cleaning and maintaining the Jail facility and continually observing locations and activities of inmates. Successful candidates must be able to think clearly and take action in tense and uncertain conditions, while maintaining professionalism at all times. Spanish speaking/comprehension skills are a significant asset.

The starting annual salary range for lateral Detention Officers is between $52,845 and $59,790 based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include health and dental insurance, Wyoming retirement and life insurance as well as vacation, holiday, sick and comp time. Employees get use of the Recreation Center and the Town/County exercise facility and access to bus and ski pass reductions. Opportunities for advancement are available. The position is 24/7 and requires shift work (i.e., nights, holidays and weekends) with 12 hour shifts. Successful applicants are employed on a probationary status for a period of one year and are asked to sign a two year commitment.

Testing will begin on Tuesday, October 24, 2017. This includes a physical fitness assessment followed by a written exam. See application for benchmarks that must be met for the run, sit-ups and pushups. If successful in the above tests, you will be ranked based on your experience, performance in the Physical Fitness Assessment, and test score on the written exam. Top candidates will be scheduled for an oral interview to be conducted on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. Applicants will receive additional information about the testing and interview once qualifications are verified.

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Show proof of being 21 years of age
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Show proof of a valid driver’s license
  • Be POST certified with Detention Officer Basic
  • Pass the physical fitness assessment, written exam and oral interview
  • Complete a thorough background investigation
  • Submit to a polygraph examination, psychological evaluation and a medical exam
